Most people do the second half of this and skip the first.

They sit down in late December — or, more often, the second of January — and write next year’s goals on top of a year they never actually looked at. Which means the plan is built on a summary written by memory, and memory is a terrible historian. It keeps a handful of vivid moments, discards the ordinary weeks entirely, and weights whatever remains toward the difficult and the unfinished.
